Any other traditions I should know about?

  • The Christmas season kicks off on the day after Thanksgiving in late November. Now known as Black Friday, it’s one of the most important shopping days in the year. It can push businesses into the black – or profitability – for the whole year.
  • December is often known as the ‘Oscar season’ as so many big films are released. Meanwhile, some films have become firm favourites on TV and are shown every year. These include ‘A Miracle on 34th Street’, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’
  • Boxing Day doesn’t exist in the US, so it’s straight back to work for many Americans after Christmas Day.
  • Sport doesn’t stop for Christmas – both the NFL American football leagues and NBA basketball leagues hold regular fixtures on the big day. These games get a massive TV audience and the American football games take place in all weathers – including deep snow.
